Just been offered a sks, imported by ksport 7.65 x 39. NIB wood stock.
Can somebody tell me anything about it, is this a good one, what's a good price, can you hunt deer with it in Indiana?

Cannot legally hunt deer with it in Indiana. I do not think it meets the case length requirements for usage under a depredation permit, either.

And "good price" all depends on the rifle's condition and the country of origin. Just being imported by "ksport" is not nearly enough information.

ETA: a little Googling leads me to believe that it MAY be a Norinco; or at least Chinese (Norinco are commercial exports) If the rifle is NIB, then $250-ish is what it SHOULD go for...before the world ended last Friday.

Does it have a screw in barrel (better) or a pinned barrel? Do the serial numbers on the part all match? (Some things to look for).

Be careful with SKS and non military ammo. Civilian ammo has softer primers that can cause a slam fire (magazine can empty without touching the trigger). Recommend replacing the firing pin with one from Murrays for added safety.

A good SKS can be a great rifle. Be aware that the safety only blocks the trigger--it does not block the firing pin.

I have a Norinco SKS. Beautiful rifle. I put a Murrays pin kit in it.
Refinished the stock, multiple coats of Tung oil.

It has never missed a beat while firing.

What's the advantage of the Murrarys kit?

Eliminates the risk of slam fire.

The free floating firing pin is replaced with a spring loaded pin.

If you have cosmoline or other crud in the firing pin channel the
free floating pin could stick forward. Accidental auto firing enabled. :ar15:

I bought a Norinco SKS in 1994 for $120 brand new.

I've never had a single problem with it over the last 18 years. I've been concerned with slam fire on it by what I've read, but I've never personally experienced it.

Recently started playing with it more and sporterized it (Tapco stock and detachable mags).

I wish we could hunt with 7.62x39. I'd enjoy it more than using my shotty with slugs.

That cosmoline can be a PITA, especially when it comes to slam firing. The first thing I did when I got mine is to remove the BCG, disassemble it and drop it into a pan of boiling water for a few. It gets rid of the cosmoline. Then just make sure to clean it well after firing. Haven't had a slam fire yet, and thats after about 1500 rounds through it.

So... Does the rifle say "Norinco" on it... Or is it a "pre-Norinco"?

Can be a big difference in price. (Pre-Norinco Chinese imports are, generally speaking, worth more)

Boy, do I regret not picking up an SKS at Fetlas a few years ago when they had a bunch of decent ones in a barrel for $79 each.

I recently had an sks for sale on here and others. After the frenzy, I decided to just keep it. Not from the money standpoint because in the last few days, I had some interesting offers. I decided not to participate in any gouging and just keep it. Not worth that much money (although if that one on-line sells for the 1250.00 then I may have to reconsider -- not) I have owned this one a few years, shot very little but it has never failed to perform. Probably for the money, the sks is one of the best rifles you can buy.

Does anyone ever discuss the 922R issues with the sks??????
