The 226 is slightly bigger and has a standard 15 round mag. The 228 is smaller but still not a compact and has a 13 round magazine. I use the 228 as a issue weapon and it is flawless. SIG has replaced the 228 by chambering the 229 in 9mm. The 229 has a milled steel slide where the 228 and older 226 is stamped steel. The only thing we have had break on our 228's is the pin that holds the breech block in place and that was after 150,000 rounds (yes 100 and 50 thousand)

I have two SIG P228s, and one of them I use for EDC. It is a great pistol and slightly smaller than the P226, thus slightly nicer to carry (for me). I've shot a P226, and I own a SIG X-Five Allround which is sort of a P226, (but then again isn't). The P226 is a fine weapon which you will almost certainly be happy with as well. Theoretically the P226 should be capable of slightly better accuracy than the P228 because of a slightly longer sight radius, but in practice I don't see a difference in my hands. The X-Five, however, is a LOT more accurate for me.

Both are great guns. But you might consider getting a 228 as they are no longer made for the US market, and are becoming harder to find in good condition.

I have a 225, 228, 229(40/357), 229(9mm) and a 230. I have had several 226s and 220s but always seem to trade them off. I prefer the 228 (M11 in military parlance). It just fits in my hand better than the others. The 228 will also use the 229 9mm and 226 mags. The 229 is probably a better gun with the stainless slide but it's also heavier and a tad more bulky IMO. :yesway:
