I've had 2 pairs of Bates side zip for years. The first pair zippers finally started to slip down. I took them to a local cobbler and he suggested sewing on a piece of 'tuff' velcro on the upper side to cover the zipper head. Works great. The velcro keeps the zipper from sliding down.

Its hard to go back to non-side zip boots once you get used to the easy-on easy-off.

I have been wearing side zips for a long time. My Bates are the best in life expecting and comfort. I tie mine tight for support due to bad ankles and double knot them.

As the owner of 4E wide feet, I would think the foot has as much to do with needing to loosen the laces as the boots.

And we have a winner. At least in my experience. The easiest to set and forget that I have found are converse and rocky. My favorite being the rocky lace in zippers.
