    we use the saf-t-trainer (the orange plastic ones). there are more durable, but more expensive ones out there, but when you tend to leave them laying on the range and give them to students.......
    i think we got ours at brownell's last time.

    Find a buddy who has a reloader to drop a wad and some shot , but NOT the powder or primer. And somehow clearly mark the shells so you know they are inert.

    I do/did the same thing with pistol rounds for practicing reloads (bullet only, no powder, no primer.) I'm very aware of weight differences and I want my training aids to mimic, as closely and safely as possible, the real McCoy.

    this is a pretty good idea, but i caution any who do this to make sure that you mark them in a very conspicuous manner.
