Calif. man shoots his way out of sinking SUV

A driver whose SUV plunged into a Northern California creek after he was startled when the hands-free device of his cell phone activated, escaped the sinking vehicle by blasting out the window with a handgun.
The 28-year-old man whose name wasn't immediately available is an armed security guard at Thunder Valley Casino, north of Sacramento. He sustained minor injuries in Sunday's accident.
A spokesman for the Roseville Fire Department said the man was traveling northbound on Industrial Avenue in Roseville when the cell phone device activated. The driver was startled and veered off the road through the guardrail. The SUV landed in Pleasant Grove Creek.
He used his gun to shoot himself out, then flagged down a passerby.

Seems like it would work, doubt he'll be hearing his cell phone for a while. Gotta wonder why he was so jumpy, or if there was another reason he drove into a creek.

Or you could just neutralize cabin pressure and open the door.... I'm down for breaking the glass to, but shooting it would be a last resort.

Got to think a little here, really think that if you're in a collision that kills the battery and you have electric windows that you are going to be able to roll that window down? Nope, better have a window punch handy, and that's exactly what I bought for myself and wife at the 1500, nice combo with punch, belt safety cutter, and spring assist knife, also go one for my nephew who will be getting his license next month. Three for $20.00.:rockwoot:

Once upon a time I was in a vehicle that rolled, ending up on its roof. There was no water involved. Glass was still intact, doors wouldn't open, after a few sore elbows, the Glock shattered the window (as a striking tool, not fired). No one was injured, not even my pistol.

I gave up any idea of brute forcing car windows at age 18 when I went through automobile extrication class. 10lb sledge full swing against the window and you could watch it bow in, but not break. Flick the sharp end of a screwdriver against a corner and watch it shatter. Tempered glass is amazing stuff.

I also wonder about a "creek" deep enough to completely immerse an SUV.[/quote said:
They may not always be deep enough but if you get any kinda major rain they can be deadly. A few years back my friend and her son were killed when her car went in a creek, she couldn't get the doors open or the window busted. She had marks all over her head from beating it against the window to bust it (also power windows).

I did think about it, this is one of the reasons that my truck has manual windows. That and I'm cheap....:D

Same deal though, it doesn't take much pressure before you can't roll the window down manually. Try it. Have someone lean against the window with say, 100lbs of weight, and try to roll it down. 2.3 feet of water = 1 pound per square inch of force. The only time the pressure is equalized is when the vehicle is full of water...
