The people who think you should "shoot to wound" are usually the same people who believe that when someone is shot or stabbed in the belly, they immediately collapse to the ground dead, dead, dead.

And a shotgun will pick them up, scoot them 10 feet across the room into a wall...

Your intent is what decides if you go to prison or are released because it was self defense. I'm sure what is implied is that you shot to stop them in a less lethal area hoping to not only stop them, but spare their life. Words mean things, and if someone were to break the golden rule and talk to the police after a self defense shooting and actually state "I was only trying to wound them" the judge is going to hear "I tried to shoot them to wound them". You shoot to stop their actions, it is simply a law of physics that stopping their actions usually happens when they are mortally wounded. In a self defense situation, you don't have time to shoot, wait a few minutes to see if they are going to stop, shoot again, wait a few minutes, etc. You will have to decide on the fly when the attacker is incapacitated enough to stop shooting, and your shots should be center mass unless they seem ineffective and you suspect body armor is prohibiting your rounds from doing their job correctly.
