Mr Beuth also said: "The police had an emergency call at 2:45pm [12:45 GMT]. The caller said there was a masked man... armed with a long gun. It is unclear whether it was a real gun.

"The caller heard four shots and said that the masked man appeared a little mentally unstable. Police special forces were called."

I guess someone could have a fake long arm, and some firecrackers, and make it seem like they were firing. That'd be REALLY mentally unstable, but clever, to accomplish death-by-cop.

Also, no real update, which I find odd. Reuters still reporting it as an actual firearm/hostage situation.

I've heard some in American media reporting it that way as well. No mention of the possibility that it wasn't a real gun.

The gunman, whose name was not released, entered a cinema in Viernheim on Thursday afternoon wearing a mask and armed with two pellet guns, a rifle, a pistol and a fake hand grenade, prosecutors said. He took four employees and 14 moviegoers, including children, hostage

So, depending on adherence to the Oxford Comma, there were either 2 guns, both of which were pellet guns, or 4 guns, 2x pellet guns, a rifle and a pistol.

Oh, and dude was a 19 year old German.
