So, about 8 months until I'm old enough for my carry permit. Got a few questions, mostly of a less serious nature, that I figure you guys could give some advice on.

First off, I have a pistol shy parent to deal with. Mom despises hand guns. Any way to convince her of allowing me to have one? I'll be 18 obviously so I could just buy one, but I feel that's pretty disrespectful as I'd still be under their roof. Would like to get it soon so I can be acquainted with it before I actually get my license. Any good ways to argue it?

Second, suggest me a carry arm. I'm leaning to something mildly eccentric in nature but that can be had for under $400. Nothing with polymer. I'm really wanting something that can be shown off to fellow enthusiasts as an unusual carry piece. Any suggestions? Reloading for a strange caliber is no problem at all.

And for some legal questions, what is the legal status of a loaded firearm kept in a vehicle, but not on the person of, a permit holder? Would it be legal to have a pistol in the glove box or a rifle behind the seat, and for that matter are CCW and LTCH the same thing in Indiana or somehow two different licenses? I've seen both terms used but I know they give varying rights depending on the state.

Some newbishness I'll admit, but thanks for helping me out. Cops can't follow me around for protection, and I don't have the money for body guards. Guess I'll just have to do the job myself!

I'll let some other experts handle the second and third questions, but as to how to get Mom on board, I'd suggest taking her with you to a gun safety class. Take them together (even if you know all the stuff being covered). Start with one of those 2 hour, mostly info and no gun handling classes. Then, take something like the 8 hour NRA Basic Pistol class. Do it together and explain to her that you want her to feel confident that you are being safe, and not that you are trying to make her feel comfortable with a handgun of her own.

I'll take a stab at this. First congratulations on your upcoming birthday and for being responsible enough to ask some important questions.

In Indiana, you are issued a license to carry a handgun ("LTCH"). You can carry it concealed or carry it openly - whichever you prefer - the law is silent. But a warning here: this is a hot topic of debate on this site, and I would respectfully advise that you observe and read through the numerous posts before forming an opinion. Of course, as here, questions are always welcome. Uninformed opinions, not so much.

As to your vehicle, if you are of legal age and not otherwise prohibited from carrying a firearm (ie. violent felon), you can have a long gun in your vehicle without a permit. For a handgun, without a permit, it has to be unloaded and not readily accessible (ie. in the trunk). Practically speaking, if you have control of the vehicle (the keys), you possess what ever is inside.

The simple solution is to get your LTCH, then you don't have to worry about whether you're legally carrying, because, with a few well known exceptions, you are legally carrying.

    1. You can't buy a handgun from a FFL under 21. You wi have to buy it in a private sale. Just a heads up you also can't buy handgun ammo under 21. (I'm under 21 and do it anyways but just a heads up)

    2. Go to a gun store and fondle. Then fondle more. Find something you're comfortable holding and like the looks.

    3. Just get your permit. Trust me. Far less hassle. No loaded handguns in the vehicle. But a loaded long gun is ok.

    4. Indiana doesn't have a ccw. We have a ltch. You can carry concealed or open here with the same pink slip.

Damn. Scooped. But I was typing on my phone. So sorry for any mistakes. Feel free to PM me with any questions. I just went through the same ****.

Good luck with the Mother thing....remember, it will be a marathon, not a sprint to convince. how about moving to your own place, own rules?
Under $400 for an eccentric handgun.....look used, look older, look smaller caliber.
LCHG and CCpermit are the same as far as I know in IN. My Pink "permission" Slip States that it is a "License to carry handgun" State of Indiana.
The description of what it is follows and is written....The licensee is hereby licensed by Indiana State Police to carry on their person or in a vehicle, any handgun lawfully possessed by Licensee.
No mention of rifles.....so a rifle behind the seat is not covered by this permit, however, that does not render one being there as illegal. One must remember that laws are made to restrict certain things....if it is not specifically mentioned as unlawful, then it is presumed to be lawful. Study your laws for the locality where you live. We all wish you good luck, especially with the MOM thing......one word of advise...Do NOT mention your desire for a handgun this Sunday.

As far as something "eccentric" as your first and only cc gun, I would personally wait and buy something with a proven history rather than have something that may not have the saftey features of modern guns. YOUR LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT. For your second or third gun, go nuts.

Maybe a Bersa .380, or Taurus revolver. If you are on a budget, spend as little as you can to get a stone cold reliable gun and save the extra for ammo and TRAINING! Then train as much as possible.

Good luck and keep us posted on the mom thing and your pistol choice. There are also plenty of places to get quality training here on INGO.

Mom, why don't you want me, your son, to be protected? I'll let you figure it out from there.

I highly recommend NOT doing that. Whenever you buy a gun, you have to remember the mission of the gun. This is a carry gun. You need two things out of a carry gun and two things only. 1- It goes bang every time. and 2- You have to not care about handing it over to a cop or having it stolen. If you ever have to use it, it'll be gone from 2 weeks to 6 months later..unless of course you have legal complications.

Buy that ugly/boring/no fun polymer gun used. Glock, XD, M&P. Save up and get the gun that works. The "cool gun" is for the safe and the range. Nothing more.

EDIT: There is a third thing needed from a carry gun. You need to be able to train with it/ take classes with it. I've never been in a class that let you use reloaded ammo. (Too much of a legal risk from Kabooms) Thus odd calibers are out. Also, you need to be able to beat on the gun and not care. That isn't going to happen if you have a "show off" gun.

Carry pieces are not for "showing off." They are for keeping in the holster for when they are needed.

If you're at the range for the purpose of shooting guns then letting other folk see, admire and shoot your gun is fairly standard.

Inside your home if you provide the absolutely safe environment required -- maybe so (but your mom probably won't be happy.)

In the back parking lot of a retail store -- no. Accidents happen when guns are unnecessarily handled. The more you're tempted to handle yours to "show off" the less safe you and everyone around you is going to be.

    You won't like this response...

But as long as you live under your mother's roof, you really should respect her wishes/decision when you talk to her about it. Even if you won't be getting your way.

Yeah, if she says no it's no.

And jeeze guys. Thinking about a Makarov. Not like I'm going to be lugging around 100 year old Ivers Johnson. I figure a Soviet combat pistol is odd enough in a sea of Glocks and Rugers. In my price range, reliable, low-cost ammo, will get the job done. A TT-33 has crossed my mind, but I've read of some safety concerns when it comes to carrying them. Would be nice to have the added power though; I've heard good things about the Wolf hollow-points. CZ-52 perhaps? I kind of meant show off at the range and talk about it with people I know. If I had the intention of whipping it out for show and tell I'd just OC it! Oh well, better safe than sorry when giving advice. Thanks for the concern for the well-being of a newb.

Just a thought on older guns.

UPDATED: Prosecutor says no charges in Goshen girl's shooting death- VIDEO

With the newer guns out there, this is less likely to happen. A dads Chineese pistol fell out of his pocket and fired when it hit the ground. The bullet killed his daughter. Pistol was determined to be defective but a life was still lost.

This. EDC is not for show-and-tell.

Or he could just keep his mouth shut. Unless she's going through his stuff, whereupon the risk of finding it isn't in being asked to leave but in the likelihood she'll ignorantly coonfinger it, he may be able to protect himself (and her) without having to make it an issue. And you know what they say: better to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Yes, it would be disrespectful. But I'm failure certain most young males of his age have crossed that line with words and deeds and possessions. I doubt I'd see anybody telling him to get rid of his porn stash if his mom said it wasn't welcome in the house. Not to imply anything directly about OP. Just highlighting the little bit of hypocrisy we have towards firearms.

anything worth having is worth waiting for, and working for...To me, the main thing here is the fact you respect your mother enough to wait. THAT is the sign of a man. Time is on your side...good luck.

OP, the thing about an "odd" handgun is that it can often be a pain in the neck finding things like various parts, spare mags, holsters, sights, etc. for it. You really want that for a piece of safety equipment?

No part of your self esteem should be invested in a tool.

Only an unasked question, is dumb. Learning by gathering information through threads like this one can be an enjoyable experience for everyone.............except for you.

Knowing that you are going to be Ban-Hammered from INGO soon anyway, I was curious about something.

    Are you on any medication?

If so, have you taken yours today?

Does depression run in your family?

If your dog died, would you - bury it? - throw it away? - or use it as a footrest til it disintegrates?

Do you have any other interests other than being insulting, truculent and down right vituperative? :dunno:

Yep - I've been watching you -
