Im looking to sell a rifle at a gun show coming up. What do you guys like to do when conducting a private sale? Do you write up a bill of sales? If so what info do you include on it. Anything I need to send to any state office or local gov't office?

Recieve cash..........walk away. Anything beyond that is personal preference. There are no requirenments of reporting a FTF sale to any local or Federal agency.
If you require a bill of sale there have been ones posted here on the forum. Just do a search

Don't forget "Make at least a cursory attempt to verify the buyer is not a prohibited person".

I like to see a DL and LTCH. Then I have them sign a bill of sale. This makes me feel safe that the person I am selling to could buy one from a dealer. If something does happen with that gun down the road I at least have some shred of evidence that I sold it on a specific day in the past.

What he said. I always pin a sign on my back as to what I have and ALWAYS sell what I take to the show for my asking price. I do ask to see an ID so I can verify age. A LTCH does not have a picture. So I ask for a DL or ID. I always feel better if they have an LTCH. I also ask if they have ever been conviceted of a felony or are currently charged with one. I have never had anyone take offense to this and if they did I would walk. Like Target said, it's a matter of preference. I do the same for guns I sell on INGO.

My preference is for a BOS and see a DLN. I also tend to sell on INGO over a gun show just because I get a better feel for the person that way.

    Again, just a preference.

As an aside, I would not be surprised if at an upcoming 1500 we see more of Mayor Bloomberg's fake buyers. So, there is still the opportunity for getting yourself on TV. Be careful and responsible.

Ask to see their ID, if you want ask for a bill of sale,
ask if they are prohibited from owning a gun.
Receive cash and have a wonderful day.
If you are like me immediately spend cash on something else you had you eye on.:D

    THIS /\

I can almost guarantee the bloomy will be sending out more "buyers".
The one's that get turned down won't make it to air however.
The video's will show the worst of the worst in an attempt to paint
all activity at a gun show as bad when it's a small percentage doing the wrong thing.
There are close to 6,000 people here on INGO who have a pretty good idea
what the laws are or a great deal of knowledge in that area.
What's the average crowd at a 1500? What percentage of them are ignorant
to the laws or won't follow the rules to make a quick buck?
At least the dealers at the show should know better and act accordingly.

When people go to gun shows, do they oftentimes bring a rifle, shotgun or other firearm they would like to trade?

There reportedly is a large gun show coming up at the Fairgrounds in Indy on Oct. 23rd and I am wondering if that will be a good one to go to.

Yes, a percentage of people attending do bring their personal items
to sell or trade. With that many people attending you have a great chance of
finding some to buy from or sell to. (If you are able to buy or sell) :)

Yes, that would be the Indy 1500. Very large selection to browse through.
A good time even if you are window shopping.

Why does it have to be codified in law? Why can't it just be the act of a responsible gun seller?

I am not saying that a person should or should not request information on a person buying a firearm from them. BUT, since there is no legal requirement to gather ANY information from a potential buyer of a firearm, and since federal law requires a cursory attempt at verifying a person is not a "excluded person" then it may be nice to know what that cursory attempt is. I have never sold a firearm, and never intend to sell one. I just buy, BUT if I were to sell a firearm, I would get all the buyers information, create a bill of sale, both of us sign that bill of sale, and then exchange money for gun. BUT that doesnt mean I have to get that information, make the bill of sale, etc. And since I dont, I want to know what the minimum requirement for the cursory attempt really is. Do I ask, hey, can you own a gun, if their answer is yes, then the transaction continues, but if they say no, then I stop the transaction at that time, and not sell.

I believe I will go to the Indy 1500 and check things out. Are there some fair and square dealers that I should be on the lookout for?

The advice I got from an ATF buddy is to
1 Verify LTCH and Drivers License
2 Write up a bill of sale for both individuals including your address and Operators License number or State ID number (not a S.S. Number)your info in their bill and their info on your bill and the firearm Info on both bills

That way if the weapon is ever stolen from that individual when ATF does a trace on it if recovered and used in a crime your partially cleared and your innocence can be more easily proven. Also if that individual is prohibited from possessing a firearm its much easier to prosecute because they used a State Issued ID to obtain that firearm in a deceptive manner

    Beautiful Milan
    1) If you are a legal resident of Indiana, do not even TRY to sell your gun outside of Indiana.

    2) Ask the buyer to see their Drivers License to verify they are also a resident of Indiana. If you sell to an out of state buyer, you risk being arrested on the spot.

    3) It sure doesn't hurt to ask if there is any reason the buyer can't legally own a gun. You never know what you will hear. Asking if they have been convicted of a felony is too narrow.

I expect to see more sting operations at gun shows, whether initiated by bloomy or not.

What if a grandma walks up to a dealer-seller and says "I want a handgun to protect myself in my own home but I don't have a license to carry one." Can grandma legally transport it from the dealer to her home or does she require an escort?

Grandma can legally transport it from place of purchase to home without a license.
