I wonder if people realize how dangerous this is. This is SERIOUSLY disturbing/scary stuff. We are going into J. Edger Hoover territory when government Law Enforcement/Intelligence agencies are essentially using their information to intimidate/blackmail public officials. The scary part about this is that the agent listed as doing this will probably be allowed to retire quietly with his pension (and security clearance) and get a cushy job in the private sector.

This could also have a chilling effect on potential recruits of government LE/Intel agencies. Background checks are fairly in depth, and the recommendation has always been to be as open with the investigators as possible. How many people would be willing to go through that kind of exhaustive probing of their lives if they knew that the information garnered might be used by members of the government to smear/blackmail them in the future for political reasons.

There REALLY needs to be criminal charges brought up for something like this. If that assistant director is not criminally prosecuted at the VERY least he MUST be fired (with NO PENSION) and have his security clearance revoked. Furthermore ANY COMPANY that hires him should have their security clearance revoked and not be allowed to handle sensitive information.

This is a DIRECT THREAT to democracy. Our system collapses if the government representatives that we elect are subject to blackmail/intimidation by bureaucrats in our investigative/intelligence agencies. What's next? The head of the CIA blackmails the president into increasing the budget? The NSA blackmails Supreme Court justices in order to get favorable ruling on warrantless wiretapping cases?

This is truly one of the most disturbing things that I have heard about the government in a LONG time.

You ought to read the comments on the WaPost site under this story, loaded with liberals gleeful about this, totally oblivious to the gross abuse of power, the exact sort of thing that got the Nixon administration down.
It's pretty obvious what sort of principles these pukes really have, isn't it?

    Yup.
Abuse of power is bad, unless it furthers their agenda.
Know some people on both sides that are OK with that.

Makes you wonder about the FISA courts courts, doesn't it? Who got bribed into upholding their legality/constitutionality? Who is blackmailing those judges? I need a shower just thinking about all this.

In this administration there is no accountability. The Secretary of State can take full responsibility for dead Americans at our embassy and there are absolutely no consequences for that. The IRS is getting away with targeting ideologically opposing groups. Why would this be any different?

Again, when Nixon was in charge, all the misdeeds of his administration were part of the charges used to force him out, even those that never happened and were only talked about, namely the IRS targeting of individuals and organizations.
Quite a contrast to now, where multiple agences, including the IRS, have been weaponized; and what a coincidence, against only those who are considered opponents of this administration.
But, of course, that was just happenstance, right?
