I am considering rebarreling a short action Savage with a .458 Socom barrel. My question is can I simply replace the barrel or does the magazine need to be opened up to allow the rounds to feed. Are there any other modifications that need to be done to make this conversion work?

what caliber is the gun today? you need to make sure your bolt face is the correcct size.

there is a thread on here from a couple years ago where indygunworks did exactly what you are wanting to do. he used a stevens action wich is the same as the savage minus a accutrigger. might be worth serching for

That would work also. I just do not have a full tool box for gunsmithing. I am set up for reloading but that is about it. I have been considering buying a cheap savage to convert or converting my current winchester m70.
