I too have been considering an S&W revolver, but I really do not one with the internal lock. I thought I had read somewhere the S&W was going to be dropping the internal lock going forward, but I cannot find where I had read that. Does anyone know if they are dropping the internal lock on the new revolvers?
There was a run of J-frames last year, maybe the 642 (?) without the lock. I don't think they're dropping the lock though.

Saw a "classic" Model 27 with 5 inch barrel at Gander Mtn recently....repro of the original 27. Didn't have a lock, but I don't know that applies to other new models or not. BTW, +1 on the Model 28 recommendation.

For these kind of money your best bet is Ruger GP-100 or SP-101. Excellent revolvers. They sell new for about $450.
