Dropped my wife’s off tonight, will be to SW Thursday. I will be curious if they send it back with any extra mags or swag of some nature for the trouble.

Folks on the S&W forum are reporting that they are already getting their pistols back. All of the ones I have seen returned had no work done, just checked and returned. No reports of free swag sent with returned gun. :noway:

Well, I got impatient and called them today. They said that it is done and waiting for a label in the shipping department. I asked what had been done and was told the hammer was replaced. The woman I spoke to was very helpful and polite. Continuing to wait . . . . . .

Final Timeline for my EZ 9:

    • 11/23/2020 request for label sent
    • 11/24/2020 label rec'd by email
    • 11/24/2020 Dropped at FedEx (2 days before Thanksgiving)
    • Delivered to S&W 11/30/2020, 8:30 am (Monday after Thanksgiving)
    • 12/4/2020 S&W acknowledges receipt
    • 12/17/2020 Called S&W to inquire about gun, told that it was complete, they had replaced the hammer, and that it was in shipping waiting for a label.
    • 12/18/2020 FedEx picks up from S&W
    • 12/21/2020 Delivered to my home

There must be an adult home to accept the return delivery.

The paperwork included with the returned gun only says "recall complete" and not specifically what they did.

BUT - I had replaced my front sight with a fiber optic from Dawson Precision. The instructions from S&W did not say anything about non factory parts being replaced with OEM parts and the sight had absolutely nothing to do with the safety recall. S&W put a stock white dot front sight on the gun. They did not return the sight that was on the gun. So, my gun was out of my hands for 28 days, 18 business days and they removed my sight.

A call to S&W customer service resulted in them telling me that they would send me a fiber optic front sight for the gun. I will probably end up buying another Dawson sight because it was a bit shorter than the stock sight to raise the point of impact. I'll have to shoot the gun to see what I'm going to do.

Why would they do the extra work that cost me and them more money?

Ruger is up front about replacing aftermarket parts with OEM parts if you send your gun in for service to them. If S&W had stated this policy in the instructions they sent with the shipping label (I actually read them) I would have removed the front sight before I sent the gun in.

S&W is pretty well known for removing aftermarket parts and replacing them with OEM and not returning the parts. I replaced the trigger in my SD 9. If I were to have to send it in for service I would have to put the OEM parts back in it or risk losing the parts. It is pretty odd though that they would go out of their way and remove your sights but I guess that's their policy.

Not that they should have done so given the recall is for hammer replacement, but are you 100% sure they sent you your slide back? Any chance that it got a new slide? Again, no reason they should have done so, but just wondering out loud.

Seems kind of crazy to do extra work to replace something (in this case a sight) that has nothing to do with the recall at all.

No new slide. I have no idea why they did this. I know Ruger has a policy that they return guns sent to them with all OEM parts. but I was not aware of it with S&W. They are at least trying to make good on this by sending me a S&W fiber optic front sight.

I did get to put a few rounds through the gun today and it worked fine. I couldn't tell any difference. I don't have before and after pics but the hammer does look new to me.

I am attaching the letter included with the gun. I am amazed at how little info about the repair there is in the letter.
