Russian Fighter Jet Buzzed U.S. Ship: Officials - NBC News

If they were to fire upon a US Navy vessel, I wonder how the warning not to do it again would be worded.

From past events I think we could extrapolate a fairly precise wording:

"We have been very clear to the Putin regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of weapons being utilized against a US Navy vessel again. That would change my calculus. That would change my equation. "

I'm betting there was no US carrier nearby when that happened. I have been told in the past that no plane whatsoever gets within a hundred miles (or more) of such a ship without permission.
At the very least, I have a feeling that several Superhornets would give the bomber crew a royal case of the heebie-jeebies. At the very most, a stern warning, then missile launch would probably end any thoughts of a repeat performance by Russian pilots.

I dunno, it would appear the crew of the U.S.S. Cook never felt it was anything beyond the Russian pilot 'showing off'. Their call, IMO.

Not really true. Yes, they would be escorted but that's all. We have very strict rules of engagement.

Russian jet buzzing US warship and nothing else, not likely to start war. Firing on said warplane likely will start war. It's a dangerous game indeed but I don't understand people WANTING war with Russia. What positive outcome could possibly happen?

Things that are happening are beginning to remind me of the so called "Cold War". Everybody pushing to the limit, stopping just before they pull the trigger, most of the time. A very dangerous game.

True. The dangerous thing is that the old hands from the cold war days who are used to this kind of thing are all out to pasture. I hope the young folks who aren't used to it don't overreact.

I imagine the pilot knew his plane was being tracked by the ship's Phalanx, capable of turning his plane into Swiss cheese...but Russian machismo + a liter of Vodka turned this guy into "Super Stalin".

I don't think we've ever had an aircraft carrier in the Black Sea, ruling out any Hornets for escort...maybe F-15s in Turkey. I think there are displacement and time limits for any navy ships that do not belong to countries boardering the Black Sea.

Yes, the Montreaux Convention sets strict limits on warships transitting the Bospurus and staying in the Black Sea.
