I just bought this RIA AP-9 from a fellow INGO member, even though its in 9mm, i figure it should be a fairly decent target pistol to help get used to the 1911 frame.

That's not something I've seen from Rock Island before. Looks sharp. If it works as well as the 1911s, you should end up well pleased, should be a heck of a gun!

    Does it accept CZ mags?

The CZ design stands on it's own merits, btw. Legendary guns. If this one works well, you may find you have no urge to change.

Here's a shot of my RIA Compact sporting a set of ultra thin rosewood grips.

    picture.php

I looked at one of these over at PSS and also saw some at the 1500. How's it shoot? I've never shot a 1911 or any 45, so I really don't know what to expect.

Also, how's the Rock Island compare to some of the higher end 1911's?

    Thanks...

For the full size Rocks, my impression is that they are much more roughly finished. One example, the rear sights do not blend in with the slide, they stick out. Especially on the Tactical models. They are also at least as accurate and reliable as much more expensive guns, sometimes moreso. They are a combination of superior function at a reasonable price that just warms my heart. But you'll not buy them to have a beauty queen, aside from the good looks inherent in the 1911. Beauty costs $$$$, and the Rocks are all about work, not flash.

I've not had any experience with the compacts. I haven't heard anything that would cause me to believe they are anything other than the same great guns the full sized models are.

Yes it does accept CZ mags, the mag closest to the pistol is actually a CZ. I've only taken it out to shoot once, it functioned great, no jams at all.

I've GOTTA find our more about those. Wonder if it's something new Rock Island is importing from Armscorp?

That would be an awesome competition gun for my boy, especially if the safety is safety only, no decocker. I can find the information about the Tanfoglio guns on Armcorps' website, but nothing about the RIA version.

RIA needs to set up at least a basic website, darn it.

I agree, they definitely need to set up a website, iv been looking for aftermarket grips and such but no luck. Yes it is from Armscorp and it is just a safety, no decocker.

I have both a RIA Compact and a Kimber Ultra Carry and the Rock compares very well to the Kimber. In some ways, the Rock is a little better than the Kimber such as the trigger. Out of the box, the Kimber had a bit of scratchiness to the trigger just before it would break where the RIA was very clean and crisp. The Rock is also about the same as far as accuracy goes, but that may be more because I suck equally with both.

The other thing is the machine work. Over all, the Kimber is very good, but there is one area that is off just a couple of thousandths in the cut around the trigger guard. On the Rock, it's perfect. There are other areas though, that you can see where the money went into the Kimber.

Right now, I carry the Kimber daily, mainly due to the lighter weight, but I have no fear of carrying the RIA. My only complaint with the RIA is the sights are low profile for concealed carry and I'm told that I need to have new dovetails cut to replace them. I have not looked into that too much, but I don't know why manufacturers don't use more common sights. With a good set of night sights, the RIA Compact would be near perfect.

As for how they shoot? In a word, Great! The recoil is not bad and they feel good in the hand (at least, it does in my hand). The 1911 has a very short trigger pull and is easy to be accurate with. Give one a try and you may find yourself hooked.

Joe, did you make the custom AF grips yourself?

No, Cathy found those at the 1500 and bought them for me. Had to dremel them down a bit to fit the safeties.

Actually, I didn't have a dremel tool at the time, so I used Cathy's electric nail filer :D It worked.

RIA AP9. (AP signifying Armscor Precision.)

Tanfoglio, who also makes the pistols imported by EAA called the Witness. (EAA makes nothing, like Cold Steel.) Tanfoglio is responsible for much of what is the IMI/Desert Eagle Baby Eagle/Jericho.

Hey xxxx. We're in bed with Tangfolio. They manufacture the parts. We assemble the guns in the PI. We handle their Asian and S. American distribution. In turn they allow us to import limited numbers into the US under the RIA brand name. Same CS... same warranty. Don't have anything electronic to send you. I'm sure you can obtain the info off of the Tangfolio website. Please feel free to contact me with any further questions.

    Thanks,

I own three RIA's. I won't say they're the best, but I parked my Colt Commander in the safe and now use the RIA Compact as my EDC. I've run approx 550 rounds thru it without a hiccup. The Colt has more value so it was a no-brainer to semi-retire it. I've become an RIA fan without a doubt.
