I came across a Remington 597 AAC SD on Gunbroker kind of by accident. I like it. Anybody have one or know anything, good or bad about them? If they're junk speak up quick before I buy it.

It's a semi auto .22 with a 16.5" threaded bull barrel, no sights, synthetic stock.
It's kind of miniature 700 in a .22 semi auto. Thoughts???

Well, I gave all of you INGOers plenty of time to talk me out of it. To late!

Looks good, I like it! I have shot one before and it was accurate and reliable.

That's what I was hoping for, accurate and reliable.......and quiet. The can, ordered for another gun should be here next month, but will fit this.

The 597 is a good little .22 rifle.

The build quality isn't quite to 10/22 standards but the 597 also comes in at a lower price point.

My 20" heavy barrel 597 will shoot 1-3" groups all day long with bulk ammo at 100 yards.

The only problem I ever had with my Remington 597 was with the bolt handle. After about 200 rounds the rivet holding the bolt handle broke causing the bolt handle to fall out, requiring the rifle be sent back to Remington for several weeks.

Stay away from the high capacity magazines, Remington or "off-brand". Both are prone to failures.

There was a company making an "improved" metal 10 round magazine but my Google-fu is failing me right now.

The gun itself is pretty good and accurate. The main issues are usually feeding and magazine failure. Feeding can normally be fixed with a Volquartsen edge extractor. Remington has redesigned the magazines 3 times for them. If your magazine is having issues, I think Remington replaces them for free.

My 597 does have some feeding issues. I'd say a round every 5-7 10rnd magazines on mine. (Blazer Bulk) Winchester Xpert HV HP seems fine so far. I think if I added the edge extractor to it that I would have nearly negligible issues.

The main issue with feeding is from the guide rods being adjusted improperly. My 597 wouldn't fire 2 rounds consecutively until i replaced the hammer and adjusted the guide rods to spec. I then went and fired 500 round without an issue at all that wasn't ammo related. Model 597 - RimfireCentral.com Forums has some great info on the 597 with detailed instructions on everything needed to make this rifle run great.
