I have a question if anybody could help I would appreciate it, I have a 26" smooth barrel 870 I was wondering if I can shoot slugs out of it, if so do I need a choke in it. Thank you for your time I am not a shotgun person so I didn't know.

Yes, I use IC choke. The Remington sluuger boxes list accuracy that I've not been able to get in actual practice. I've fired both my 12 and 20 ga and I get perfect bullseyes at 25 yds for the 20ga and 30yds for the 12ga. A far cry from the 50yd that the packaging list. I was hitting about a foot low at 50 from a rest. Time for some rifled barrels if I want to reach across the cornfields where I hunt.

Yes, you can shoot slugs out of a 26 inch barrel. Perfectly OK to do so.

But if you want to go deer hunting with it, I suggest a shorter barrel. And if you buy a shorter barrel, then it might as well be a slug barrel.

You can shoot slugs out of it as long as the choke isn't any tighter than a modified choke. That is the official answer from Remington at their armorer schools.

I shoot sluggers. 26" barrel, imp cly choke. Red dot on a saddle mount.
Groups about 3" inches at 50 yds. Most of the deer I harvest are < 35 yds.

Nice post. I have always had two shotguns my deer gun and my bird gun. I had known you could shoot slugs out of a smooth barrel, But I have never known what choke to use. Great little info!
