It really depends on how much driveway you need to clear. I live in the lake effect snow belt and have been clearing a 60' two car wide driveway with an MTD single stage two stroke for the last 8 years. The little snow blower might take two passes on a drift, but it is lite and I can hang it on the wall in the summer time. I do like the "plug in the wall" electric start.

Not knowing where your dad lives makes it hard to give an educated opinion. If I lived up north again I would have a gear driven 2 stage as some of those have suggested, but living in central Indiana that is not really needed.

I have had a Toro CCR3650 for seven years and it starts on the second or third pull all the time. Mixing gas is not really a big deal to me as it takes the same mix as my chainsaw. If the snow is expected to be more than 8" or so, I will usually do the drive twice, once about halfway thru the snowfall. That may not be needed, but it at least gets me out of the house. :):

Maybe I have just been lucky with mine, but I would not hesitate to buy another.

My wife just advises that you should buy the electric start.

We picked up 24" of snow this morning and the little MTD worked it's magic. I did have to chip away at the waist deep drifts.

I have an Ariens 5 hp 24 inch two stage snow blower with electric starter added and had to rebuild the carburetor last year, only maintenance besides oil and spark plugs in over 21 years of living on the shores of Lake Michigan in Lake County. Still almost looks like new with a few scratches.
