Read on another forum tonight that an M14 would fire a 7.62x39 round. (Yep, that is the truth, I'm not just using it like the old "My friend wants to know if this is legal" trick. :D)

Any M14 experts out there want to weigh in on this? This one has my curiousity pegged.

    Never heard of an M14 that shoot 7.62 X 39 ......

    The M14 dose however shoot 7.62 ..
But it is 7.62 x 51 also known as .308

Alot of people think that when they see 7.62 it means 7.62X39

    but it could be anything 7.62x25 ,7.62x39 , 7.62x51 , 7.62x54 , or even 7.62x59 (30-06)

    :dunno:

If there is a M-14 that shoot 7.62x39 its a new one on me :dunno:

Haven't seen any follow up, but here was the claim. The topic at hand was if all 7.62x39 was interchangeable.

Another thought was the Americans wanted a round that could not be used by the Russians but we could use. This was the outcome of the 7.62/M14, it could fire the Russian 7.62x39 (like firing a .38 thru a .357 pistol) but the Russians could not fire the 7.62 NATO thru their rifles.
We did take a 7.62x39 and fire it thru a m14 and it worked.

The posts leading up to this were exactly what some have posted earlier regarding 7.62x25, 39, 51, 54, etc... and the common questions regarding bullet diameters (.300, .303, .308, .311 and so on)

I see a BIG KaBoom waiting to happen! The extreme difference in length would cause some severe headspacing issues!:nono::runaway::stretcher:

And the round should fall loosely in the chamber since the rim diameter is approx .026" smaller on the 7.62Soviet compared to the 7.62NATO.

    EDIT:

    but it could be anything 7.62x25 ,7.62x39 , 7.62x51 , 7.62x54 , or even 7.62x59 (30-06)

    30-06 is 7.62x63

I doubt that a 7.62x39 case would engage the bolt. The diameter is different and I doubt the firing pin would impact the primer.

    Blood,
The question was, will a 7.62X39 fire in a M14? The M14 is chambered for the 7.62x51. The rounds you have pictured are 7.62x39 and 7.62x54R...not the correct creature.
But I do agree that anyone who tries to fire 7.62x39 out of ANY rifle chambered for 7.62x51 needs to have their flipping head examined.

    LOL
That is what I get for posting at 4:30 am.

Ok here we have 7.62x54R, 7.62x51, and 7.62x 39 I still don't think it would fire and there would be no way in hell I would try.
