A customer told me this today and I have no reason to doubt him.

His brother was shooting a 44 mag in an indoor range without hearing protection. He lost 90% of his hearing in his right ear from shooting just 5 rounds. Yes they were hot loads he loaded himself.........

Anyone else ever hear of this happening outside of being in an explosion?

There is a virus that can cause it as well. If treated very quickly, you might get some hearing back.

It happens. Some people are more susceptible than others, but it does happen. He should see an ear specialist ASAP. If he seeks medical treatment soon, there is a possibility that he could regain some or all of the hearing he lost. Quick access to an ENT doctor and steroids is the key here. Seriously, be on the phone tomorrow if he hasn't already done so, and be sure to tell them it was a sudden hearing loss. Time's a wasting.

I have a significant hearing loss and constant ring (tinititis) in the Right ear from a hearing protection fail at Pop's. The feller in the lane to my right was shooting a hand cannon and my broken Ear Pro fell out of my ear as he was shooting. My ear hurt for a few days and has a constant ringing ever since. A low ring that I generally only hear during prayer and when falling asleep. I notice just the Right is more sensitive to loud noises now.

Correct, in my case it was shots of steroids into the cochlea.

Yes, you do have nerve endings there and you have to sit still so Dr. House can guide the needle in.:D

Has anyone ever experienced a irritating sound in their ear similar to a plastic shopping bag being crumbled loudly (like amplified with tweeters and a thousand watts behind em')? I started experiencing this late in high school. It would only happen when I was in the school band, and the crash symbol player would be bangin' away right behind me.

A few years ago, I had a virus for a few weeks. One day during that virus, For about 2 seconds, My left ear rang so loudly, I could hardly stand it. Immediately after, I was essentially deaf in that ear.(like someone flipped the switch off) Immediate trip to doctor for steroids, etc, had no effect. Hearing never returned. Now I hear noises like chimes at different frequencies, but very little else from that ear. Know what the ENT said? "Sorry about your luck, but I'd rather loose hearing in my ear than sight in my eye".

Words can't express how comforting that was!

    Don't get us started.:D

When I complained about my ear, my ENT in Lafayette said "we need to consider amplification." This isn't hearing loss; something is wrong.

Fortunately Dr. House was quick on the trigger with the steroids.:yesway:

Yeah, due to a misdiagnosis by an NP and my own stubborness I had the infection in my right ear get out of hand. By the time I went back to my doc's office and actually saw my doctor it was too late. He sent me to ENT but unfortunately it was too late to recover any of the 90% loss. It was possible to prevent the infection from affecting my other ear though. Gotta say I already had some loss and damage to my right ear from shooting without proper protection. Young and dumb I guess.
