    Use non-encrypted communication, and just have an encryption plan for sensitive communications.

    IE: The frequency is not encrypted, but what you say is...

    Fyi: Any use of 'code' including 'code words' to hide the meaning of your transmission is against the law. Of course, in a shtf situation...

    I'm a ham newbie, but this is clearly defined.

    Any thoughts on the Yaesu VX-7R ? CONSIDERABLE more pricey I've seen but another radio guy recommended? I am a newbie looking for a couple shtf radios for the family that will be durable and useful. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, especially "where to buy from "

    Read this whole thread. That radio is fine but for simplicity and budget I would get a pair of ft-1900's or a 1900 and an ft-270.

    I saw that new antenna on my way home from work. I may get one someday. For a beginner though, I would get reliable, dead nuts simple, VHF rigs.

    Once they are hooked they will end up more money in connectors and analyzers than radios
