I would expect the zombies to shoot back, they have nothing to
lose and everything to gain.

The difference is you know the lay of the land,
and which direction they would more than likely aproach from.
Things go bad, I'll drop a tree across the road, force a foot invasion.
Set up trip wires with bells & cans w/rocks.
They know that I know where their at.
Lots of simple things with little thought, little cost.

Well if you try to think more realistically about zombies they would probably be slow due to the decay of muscle tissue.

My scenario has always been the 28 days later or Dawn of the Dead type. More along the lines of infected people from a biological disease, and chasing the crap out of everyone around.

Zombies on fire are dangerous. Shooting other zombies doesn't seem to make them into meals for other zombies. They crave untainted flesh.
