I've received a couple of e-mails advertising the new Starlink MIni- backpackable. The hardware is $599. The service is $30 in top of Starlink home service which is $120.

I'm not interested, but I'm still happily using Starlink for my home internet. I still have the original first-gen hardware and I have no complaints.

[ETA] Looks like it is currently only available to long-term Starlink subscribers.

Wow, 150$ a month is kind of bonkers. I get decent unlimited 5g hotspot in the middle of nowhere for 50$ with T-Mobile. It’s enough for everyone in my house to stream and game on at the same time too.

That T-Mobile internet box is hard to beat, as long as you have signal!

True middle of nowhere would have you needing Starlink. I wasn't able to get T-Mobile signal at my rural place, so that was out.

Starlink should be a last ditch effort, when it's down to just that or the old, super slow ViaSat or HughesNet.

But, even the middle of nowhere gets fiber, so I said goodbye to Starlink and have gigabit fiber service for $84.99/mo.

Wish they would bring fiber my way. Best wired connection available is crap AT&T 5mbps dsl. I contacted Comcast/xfinity and asked how much it would cost to run it the third of a mile down my road off the highway they run it on, and they told me 64 or 68 THOUSAND dollars. So T-Mobile it is I guess.

We were lucky and our power company now provides it.

Do you have Verizon cell phone coverage at 3 bars of 4g or better.

My parents have the cell phone router and 3-4 bars of 4g coverage and I can get almost 21 MBPS enough for streaming 4k video.

Cost on my bill for them is 25 a month for as long as I pay for it or less if the cost falls below 25.

Nothing for the router easy to setup and the only issue I ever have is when mom does whatever people do in their 80 to disconnect the service from the device.

Yeah, but I'm satisfied and not too interested in bargain shopping this.

Well which was it, 64 or 68?
Spectrum just ran fiber all over this neighborhood last fall and I'm pretty sure there are subsidies involved to get everyone even the country bumpkins up to speed. So I wonder how much they're telling the government it cost to run a mile?
And we are all very excited to pay 80-100 bucks for 300m internet vs 110 for Starlink 5m.

But it only works if your area has good cell coverage, which most rural areas do not. I am very happy to have Starlink (even though I'd rather not pay $120 / month). My cell coverage is poor with all providers. I'm lucky when it hits 2 bars, usually 1.

Our REMC has talked about providing fiber, but there is no timeline yet.

Once REMC gets fiber to your area, they will bug the crap out of you to sign on, while not really touting the prices involved. At least for me a few years back, it was double the monthly fee of Comcast cable Internet, plus whatever hardware costs were involved.

Fiber may be really fast, but not near fast enough for a service that works fine for my needs. Then there is the issue that REMC power to my house goes out about 10X as much as the Comcast cable.

When REMC's only job is to keep my power on, they suck at it. Why in the world would I pay them a dime more for extra service, when they struggle to do their primary job?

In my area, we've lost REMC power but the fiber stayed up. Don't ask me how...

I pay $65 a month for 1.2gig fiber now. Also why I said no to starlink, that and 5 months after being on a waiting list for starlink the fiber company called(was also on that list) and said I was up next.

Also like firecadet613 our fiber stayed on even when the power was out :) Just used an inverter and a battery for the modem and my laptop. 2 times this has already happened. The generators are for important things like refrigeration/freezer and a propane salamander(the later can now be run on batteries as I have a cordless RIDGID one now and a ventless wall heater that just needs 2 batteries) :).
