I'm relieved I just read this incident here. I was not aware that it was illegal to sell to someone that isn't an Indiana resident. How does this apply when buying? I always try using a reputable shop when purchasing my guns. The hope is that they take their duties seriously.
If buying, selling, or trading with persons out of state ALWAYS use an FFL to transfer. If doing any of these things with in Indiana always verify residency and legal right to own a firearm.
Scams are one of the biggest problems associated with the internet now days. Wether or not he says he's got a North Carolina phone number, that might not even be the case.
Now before I continue: I agree 100% that this sounded close to an ATF-type sting. Never heard of one, but sounds too fishy not to be.
As I was saying - there's very free, very public ways to create a ROUTING phone number of your choosing; no matter what state you're in just as long as you have a phone number to set it up.
So the thing to be considered when I say that is, perhaps seeing how the person wouldn't meet you at an FFL dealer would mean his intentions could have been different than your expectations. Maybe he wasn't going to buy it . People have done some pretty bold, stupid things just to get what they want.
