I have long wondered why "Stop" is not the normal gesture.

Ditto. How hard is it to take your left arm and point over your head if going right? The only thing I can think of, is that these signs can also be used for cars, so if you the normal gesture for "stop," it looks like you're waving to someone.

They were originally designed for cars before mechanical turn signals existed.

    THIS.

In a car it is hard to point over your head and be seen.

They're also for HD riders too cool to use the actual equipped turn signals. Remember, if you're a "cool" HD rider, left is not parallel with the road, but at a 45 degree angle down so it looks like you're waving. :n00b:

We needed a law for that? :dunno:

What's the signal for, "I'm going to ride my bike on the sidewalk straight at pedestrians"?

Yes, otherwise Barney Fife might decide to cite someone for failing to signal.

Using the raised left arm to signal a right turn is rarely understood by most drivers. In addition, while cycling the raised left arm throws off your center of gravity and puts your hand farther away from your handlebars, thus you have less control.

See what happens when you take your left hand off the bars...

No, no. When you point down like that, it's to point out a road hazard. Since it's a Harley, it's probably oil :stickpoke:
