I was visiting a high school in Hamilton County when the pledge was being broadcast over the television. Most of the students opted out of standing and giving honor to the flag. :noway:

sadley this is what is becoming of america, the dope smoking parents have corrupted there kids brains and now we have a whole generation of people with no respect for authority or american traditions. The flag is sacred!!! Sitting in the pledge should not be an option in schools, it sets a bad example when they are allowed to get away with this. wait till they are out on the street thinking they have a "right" to do dope and talk back to police. They get away with murder in schools and its only getting worse :xmad:

Let me say at the outset that I won't be able to reply and keep up in a timely manner with this thread.

First, I'd like to ask those who strongly support the flag and pledge of allegiance what goal/purpose is being sought in these things? *Why* should our youngest citizens have a flag in their presence and taught to pledge allegiance to it -- to a flag? You want children to revere "America" but what does that mean to you? Does it mean to the citizens of this nation? , or does it mean to the institution which is its present government? , or does it mean to the individual liberty ideas of the founding fathers?, or does it mean the Federal Government gaining superiority over states 1865 (e.g. the "One Nation" concept vs. "Federation")?, or does it mean the socialist programs from Hoover and especially FDR?, or does it mean to the present powers that be which regulate more or less every area of your life?

Second, if you believe in taking a principled position (what *ought* to be) and think we should teach alligence to a government not a set of ideas, I would like to ask: is it appropriate for foreigners (e.g. a french or chinese citizen) swear allegiance to the government over their jurisdiction or to the USA?

It is worth pointing out that the pledge of allegiance was written by a strong supporter of socialism. My concern is that children are being taught subservience to that state via the flag & pledge, not the founding fathers concepts of individual liberty. I am all for supporting the ideas of individual liberty as per our founding fathers, but let us not confuse support of "America" in this sense with the others above. Teaching children to revere the present government which violates the constitution in every way, (or any government) is, I believe, not beneficial. The founding fathers feared the powers of government, and despised democracy. A strong idea of individual liberty would not entail requiring its citizens to swear allegiance/subservience to a government institution - especially the Federal Government in its present form.

There IS no story, just he poll. Fox wants to make the news, not report it. In this case, they make it by inuendo. As long as gunnies believe and repeat this junk, we won't win.

Hmm..whatever happened to getting the government out of the classroom? You certainly can't have it both ways. I'm willing to put up with the "sacrifice" of getting rid of the symbol of the state, if it will separate schools and the state.

Actually there was a story which caused the poll. A school in CA told several students that they couldn't wear the American flag on cinco de mayo. Then there was the recent incident where a principal told a kid he couldn't fly the Flag from the back of his bike for the same reason.

Both were discussed on this site when they were happening.

ETA I can't find the threads here, or the news articles on Fox but here are links to reports of them.

    Hi Mr. Jarrell.

On this one, it's not a matter of having it both ways. It's more like not throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
