Both are great. I used to carry a spyderco tenacious half-serrated which was great at cutting rope and the like but harder to sharpen. I now carry a BM plain blade auto. Its much easier to keep sharp so I do it more often and it always gets the job done.

I do think I would ever get a fully serrated blade though.

Serrated is great for work because after opening 2k boxes and it has gotten dull the serrations are still useful to ripping them open anyway.

I would think a blade steel with good edge retention and a slicier (thinner angle) blade would make a plain edge cut through a bunch more boxes :dunno:

On a knife for general purpose use, a non serrated edge is king.

For a defensive, a fully serrated blade is hard to beat. Creates a wicked wound cavity, and can really help defeat barriers like leather.

I’ve never seen the functional purpose for a partially serrated edge, other than for users that don’t maintain a good edge.

Serrated knifes started the Wussification of the American male.
    Exactly.

Knife edge for knives and people who need and know how to use KNIVES.

Serrated are for people who can't, don't, don't know how or want to sharpen a real knife but want to pretend they do. Serrated knives are for people who cut a lot of bread.

Cut a seatbelt in an emergency gotta cut it now situation, you will soon realize the benefits to the serrated edge.

After saying that, I only carry a standard flat ground hi-carbon folder. I keep it shaving sharp.
