Pelosi: ‘With Skyrocketing Gas Prices, Americans Can No Longer Afford Rubber Stamp Congress’

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on President Bush’s, Speaker Hastert’s, and the Republican Congress’ empty rhetoric on gas prices. Key facts on the Majority's failure to address gas prices follows Pelosi’s statement.
With skyrocketing gas prices, it is clear that the American people can no longer afford the Republican Rubber Stamp Congress and its failure to stand up to Republican big oil and gas company cronies. Americans this week are paying $2.91 a gallon on average for regular gasoline – 33 cents higher than last month, and double the price than when President Bush first came to office.
“With record gas prices, record CEO pay packages, and record oil company profits, Speaker Hastert and the Majority Congress continue to give the American people empty rhetoric rather than join Democrats who are working to lower gas prices now.
“Democrats have a commonsense plan to help bring down skyrocketing gas prices by cracking down on price gouging, rolling back the billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies, tax breaks and royalty relief given to big oil and gas companies, and increasing production of alternative fuels.”
    * * *
Key Facts on the Majority’s Failure to Address Gas Prices:
President Bush, Speaker Hastert and the Majority Congress wrote and passed a Republican energy bill that President Bush’s own Energy Department said would raise gas prices on American consumers. Big oil and gas companies wrote the Republican energy bill, and the American people paid the price.
The Majority rejected imposing tough penalties on price gouging companies three times in the past year, since that time, gas prices increased by another 11 cents a gallon.
Speaker Hastert and the Majority have been blocking action on Congressman Stupak’s Federal Response to Energy Emergencies Act (H.R. 3936) since last September, which would protect American consumers from high gas prices by empowering the FTC and the DOJ to investigate and prosecute oil companies engaged in price gouging at each stage of the energy production and distribution chain and outlaws market manipulation.

I like this part best: $2.91 a gallon on average for regular gasoline – 33 cents higher than last month, and double the price than when President Bush first came to office.

It seems the democraticly controlled Congress did the exact opposite of what they said. For those who might think this is a fake it comes directly from her house website:

Seems fine to me, considering it was written over 2 years ago.

EDIT: Oh, NOW I see the point you were making. Never mind.

The Republicans could have openned offshore drilling and oil shale in the rockies when they had the majority, but they failed to do so which is very disappointing. This would also include the bill that Bill Clinton vetoed in the year 1994 that would have opened all of it, but he said that it wouldn't be ready for another 10 years.

I believe that all of our politicians have failed us, the Republicans are only talking about opening the country to drilling now because they are in the minority. The majority Democrats will not pass it because they care more for the environment then they do for the peoples' pocketbooks.

It is not the oil companies that are gouging us, to tell you the truth, over 50% of the stock in oil companies is controlled by pension funds. If we hack away at their profits, we also hack away at peoples' retirement money and they make an all industry low of 8.5% profit margins. The oil companies make around $0.09 a gallon, where the federal government makes $0.21 a gallon and some state governments make near $0.30 a gallon.

The Congress is diverting the attention from them by placing all the blame on the oil companies, which in turn will help get them elected, like it did in 2006 when the Democrats took over the control of Congress. We need domestic oil production now!

DustinG is correct. Both parties have been irresponsible in the past and also play fast and loose with the truth as always. No one has wanted oil wells drilled off their coast. So both parties supported the moratoriums on drilling. No one wants a refinery in their state, so both parties resist it. It's the same deal as all of the so called pork barrel projects (earmarks). Most all of them go along to get along (One area that McCain has stood up against the rest of them). Both parties are more concerned with power and feathering their own nests than with the good of the country.

Big +1 here. Government needs to serve the people the are supposed to represent, nto big companies and not the rich. Oil is a major problem, not only because of foriegn dependance or drilling but simply our plain and simple dependence on it. Arguements about drilling are one thing, but at the same time we should be researching more and more methods for energy. Unfortunately, big business strikes again though. Is it in big oil companies' best interests for new energy alternatives? I get sick whenever I see one of the commercials from BP or Sunoco when they talk about alternative energy, when I know that they are slipping money into a pocket and whispering in an ear somewhere in Congress. :( :(

For all those disguisted with the gas prices, call Pelosi's DC office and tell her to bring offshore drilling to a vote, she is the Speaker of the House and has been blocking it.

    (202) 225-0100

The more people that call, the more of a chance we will have for lower gas prices!
