I've never bought anything from a pawn shop, let alone a gun. I see a few members have, however. I'm curious. What is it like? What is a typical inventory like? Are they FFL dealers? Enlighten me, please. There have to be some entertaining stories..."Why, yes, This was King Faruk's personal Glock!"
I believe they would have to be a FFL. Usually expect to find them in a rougher section of town. And the prices and quality will likely be all over. My experience yours might vary. I seen some reasonable deals and I seem some outragous deals, and every so often you'll find a great deal. I think you really need to know what you're buying and what the going price is. Even more than a normal gun store. We all know that there are some gun stores that are over priced and some that reasonable. But once you've found the better stores you can pretty much shop comfortably knowing that you get a reasonable deal. But at a pawn shop one gun might be a good price and the next price might not. Also, for what it's worth when I'm at a pawn shop I start all negotiating by offering at least 20% less than the asking. (Even when the price was reasonable to begin with.)
Hope this helps.
I bought a really nice mauser with the cosmoline still in for under $100 once I saw a 44mag with a 6" ported barrel that I still kick my self for not buying.
