The bad guy that got shot used to live across the street from me. He was a real piece of work. Very nasty, he, the woman and another male around the house would scream profanities at the top of their lungs, even when they were just walking down the sidewalks talking on the phone. Politely asking them to not talk that way infront of the women and children was rewarded with being threatened to be shot, raped, house burned down, etc, peppered with more profanities. There was a lot of times when people were seen lurking around between the houses in the middle of the night. That seems to have stopped since they left. The whole neighborhood was glad to see them move. One less crook for the legal system to put back on the street.

the officers went "overboard" in shooting the suspect.

Negative, ghostrider, especially given the background of one of the officers involved. He's seen the elephant and got the t-shirt. He knew what to do.

What does the J&C expect? Flip over the scout car like Jackie Chan and kung fu the knife out of Spencer's hand with a sword or something?

Here's LPD practicing in the City Hall parking lot:

Don't you read the J&C? The police cannot shoot anyone. Apparently the police have to use verbal judo or something.
Of course they went "overboard". I mean, don't they have to orally warn, then fire a warning shot and only then shoot the perp in the hand? Even if the perp has just attacked a police officer.

I didn't really understand what the writer meant by that...
