    When one of my garage computers was crushed in and it looked like the DVD drive was destroyed, I dismissed it because it is an old desktop not worth upgrading or even servicing in any way.
    I post from this one.

    However, I just toyed with it and the drive was not destroyed. It was just that the tray was knocked off the rails.
    A few minutes jacking around with it and now it works again. Still ugly.

    But I just ripped an old CD I know to be in the universal database, Johnny Cash effort.

    Using EAC the rip came out with 0:0:0:0 plus a really long alphanumeric check number present and accounted for in the database checksum comparison. Zero errors.

    Which means the beat up thing still works flawlessly.
    So, for now, ripping can continue.
