I hope he stays with it !

Well, I mean I don't know how long it will be till they put him on turn by himself (throw him to the wolves).

The last two have been rated craftsmen, so they were given a VERY short time. Even though they didn't know the equipment in the area.
This guy isn't even a rated craftsman though. He's a trainee. So I don't know what they think they can get away with.

And, the new guy is in his 60s.

That sure doesn't sound a safe way to do things.

    No it's not.
Also, doesn't make sense from a $$ perspective.
They are just now starting to realize the importance of training.
One "heat" (a ladle of steel) is worth between $100,000 and $1,000,000.
We average one of those an hour.
If we "terminate the cast" we lose 2 hours of production.
Which would be between 200k and 2 mil.

So from a money perspective, they should want trained employees.
And from a safety perspective, even more important.
Heck, he was with me last week, and almost melted his hard hat.

We used to have 2 man turns.
They'd put new guy with senior guy.
They could be together for years. Learning.

They did put this guy with the senior guy (on shift).
    Me.
The senior guy is on days. The next senior guy is out for surgery most of a year.
So they'll leave him with me a short time, then throw him to the wolves.
So I'm trying to teach him on a crash course.

Normally, wait for calls, teach him about the call we are on.
Now, I'm going out in the field between calls, trying to work on stuff to show him.
Setting stuff up on the bench. Stuff like that.

    The guy has bad knees.

Well, most of us do, from working on stuff at floor level or whatever.
But his are BAD. I walk ahead to a call, then have to wait for him to show up.
That's gonna be a disadvantage if he has to run for safety.
Which we have all had to do.

    Chicken was good.
    Got busy.
Found a Colt Competition really cheap but add taxes and shipping, it's $820. Still the cheapest right now. Going to sleep on it.
Going to South Bend this weekend and wish I could take it with me to the BIL.
