Isn't it obvious? None of those people, Jesus, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, were popular during the time they were doing their work. They were reviled and criticized byt the establishment during their time. It was only after the effects of their work were evaluated and accepted did they become popular. The people who gained power and popularity throught their rhetoric and appearance and facility for language before the fruits of their labor had been harvested are a better example. Those people no longer have our admiration and our word for their common knowledge negates any positives found in the word, "fame." We refer to this type as "infamous."

One other thing to think about here. Name the person (not Diety) who has had the largest effect on your life this year. Good or bad not noted, also same question but, for your life. Now people are very short on memory, and all the "my parents", "my pastor", "a specific teacher" answers are thrown out, they aren't newsworthy. There are a lot of people who have taken a lot of action this year due to BHO who don't consider him great in any way. That doesn't mean he hasn't had a dramatic impact on their lives. You can poll a thousand people with any question, and make the results say exactly what you want, just by changing how you phrase your question.
