I'm looking at delving into the world of trap shooting and bird hunting. I did skeet in my youth but just backyard stuff, not competitively. I'm looking at buying a "budget" o/u, just to get into things. Currently I'm looking at a stoeger long fowler or a savage 555, any input into these guns? I'm not looking to drop more than say 5-700 on it at the moment

If it matters, I'm 6' 235, and a Remington 870 fits me very well

Dunno if you can find one in your price range, but I've always wanted a Ruger Red Label.
Just a suggestion, at least if you can find one in that range and if you like it once you've had a chance to handle it.

Won't find much on an O/U in that price range at Indiana gun club. Look on gun broker for a used SKB with fixed chokes they are way better than any you asked about for a bit more or might be able to find one in your price range

I've got a cheap stoeger o/u. ($400). Love it. It's not fancy, and I don't shoot boxes and boxes every weekend, but it has served me well.

I would also suggest the red label. Nice guns for not that much more.

I have looked at the Stoegers.
Low rib, receiver sticks above it at back (all I've checked).
Lever sits off to side (not straight), some very angled.

I had a Baikal that was better in rib, lever etc.
But it sucked in stock dims (which I changed- extra wood is something we can deal with).
In the end it still needed a bend at the wrist to drop stock.

But being 26" and not 28" I said screw it and sold.

I like the Brownings over Redlabels (have shot/hunted both). Unfirtunately the Brownings I ran hit higher than I liked.
Coworkers Superposed hits a little lower for me. Not in the config I want though :(

Inexpensive O/U? I'd look into the CZ Mallard or the Drake.

Stoeger also makes a good inexpensive single barrel trap gun with I think a 30" barrel

Go used, get quality. I just bought a used Winchester 101. Paid under a grand for it. Very pleased with it so far. There are a few good used choices out there for right around $800-1000. If you buy a used one in that range and decide to sell it in the near future, you're not going to get hurt on it at all.

I also have a Winchester 101, it is a quality shotgun and a keeper for sure. For a cheaper shotgun, I agree with the CZ line. I have a Woodcock in 28 ga, and it is also a keeper.

I've got a Mossberg International Silver Reserve. I have had good luck with it thus far. Probably have 1500+ rounds through it. It's no Browning or Beretta, but it gets the job done.
