How big of a deal is this? Figure Act might know.

Well, first, I only know ROVs were being used, because of the depth. I didn't think they'd be using a "2 man" sub.
Unless it's a ROV operated by 2 men. :dunno:
The wreck is 12,500 ft down.
The Trieste can go to 35,000 and has a 2 man crew. So it's easily in range. But I don't think it likely they used Trieste.. but I could be wrong.
Alvin can go to 14,000. And there are more subs that can reach it. But they are in high demand and expensive to operate.

Still, hit by a manned sub, or a ROV, it's the same.
The wreck is a "protected" wreck. Operating near it may mean you're scavenging. Bad news if they're caught.
And not saying anything makes you look guilty.
Saying something would still be trouble, and suspicion. But being caught in a lie (even a lie of omission) is worse.

As for damaging the wreck, archaeological wise, that's bad. You don't take a sedge hammer to the pyramids.
On the other hand, it's a seawreck. By definition, it's already sunk. So.. it's going to decay over time.

Being that it's in international waters, one would think they could just tell the NOAA to suck a fat d***

Pretty sure I read something about a UN resolution.

The problem is NOT taking the items

The problem is finding a country that will keep you safe should the US, UK, etc.. want those items back.

If you have enough money you can take the items.
You will need force to keep them. And unsure you will be able to sell openly via black market sure to private collectors.
