IMO tracking is the most important feature when It comes to long range shooting. If the scope does not track it is completly worthless. Alot of folks assume all scopes track, but in real world less than 1/2 actually do.

Well here's the first range report: Indiana weather sucks!
Hfdcowboy had to work yesterday so we decided to go to the range today, just to find out the weather forecast wasn't accurate at all. In total, I fired 4 rounds and spent 30 minutes in the truck warming back up, then got out and managed 6 more. The first 4 got me on paper at 100 yards, then I fired 2 groups of 3. The first group confirmed internet folklore that m80 ball ammo is only good for about 5moa (4 inch group for me.)

    Then I changed to Hornady Zombie-Max 168gr:

All in all, for being miserably wet and cold, I'm pleased with the results. My towel froze to the bench I was sitting on, and the bipod was resting on an ice covered table with no way to preload. I definitely am looking forward to a nicer range day where I can shoot from prone with a much more solid rest, and expect this rifle to shoot much better than I can while I ease into long range shooting. Next range trip will include multiple 5 shot groups with different ammo, plus I plan to acquire dies and load up some of my own. This rifle certainly seems to like the 168gr a-max bullet that the zombie ammo is loaded with, and I plan to start my loading with those bullets.

Not that im aware of. I think you pretry much have to take a leap of faith on the chasis, but alot of folks I respect are happy they took the leap

Sniper Company (SniperCo) has a couple AI chassis systems and a couple other stocks in inventory. They're in Fort Wayne. You can give them a call and Shaun might be able to help you.

Well, for better or worse I ordered the Choate Super Sniper stock.

I read all the reviews I could find and decided I was okay with the heavy weight and thick grip. Mounted it up this evening and so far I like it. Not near as heavy as I imagined, and the grip feels good to me. I know its no AI chassis, but way better than the factory plastic crap and it saves money that will go toward glass. Anyway, hopefully in the next few weeks I can get some quality range time without the freezing rain and see where I'm at.

Final purchase for now. Picked up a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 scope with the sunshade today from A&A Optics at the 1500 and of course came straight home to mount it up. Without a shot being fired yet I am definitely impressed with the quality of the glass, especially compared to the Nikon binoculars I usually take into the woods when hunting. Updated range report to come soon...

Yeah I was a little nervous after first mounting the scope because it looked like the sunshade would be very close, but it worked out well (almost as if you've done this before, haha.) Thanks again Alan and I'll definitely keep this updated after I start sending rounds downrange.

    Range Update

6 hours at Waveland Gun Club this past Sunday sure provided a lot of data. Finally got a chance to spend some serious time behind the rifle and put some meaningful rounds downrange, and had more fun behind a rifle than I've had in a while.

The only ammo I had available to shoot was one box each of M80 ball (used for initial zeroing of scope), Winchester X-clean (terrible results), Hornady Zombie Max, and Federal Gold Medal Match. While the M80 wasn't great, it did better than I expected at 1.5-2" at 100 yards. The Winchester was only fired at 300 yards, and my best guess is about 8-10" (didn't even measure).

The Z-max and FGMM were pretty close on group size and POI. I purchased some Hornady 178gr A-max and Hornady 168gr BTHP Match bullets the day before, and once we get a .308 die set we'll be working up a load with those, hoping to break below the .5moa mark. After all the research, and finally assembling the rifle how I wanted it...I am very please with how she shot, and confident that with a little more work on my mechanics I can reduce these groups even more. My personal objective is <.5moa before I go beyond 300 yards.

Here are my best groups at each range:

    Hornady Zombie Max 168gr at 100 yards - .6"
    IMG_20130224_195424_877_zpsf140e321.jpg

Federal Gold Medal Match 168gr at 200 yards - 1.2"
    IMG_20130224_194158_522_zpsbc5979eb.jpg

Federal Gold Medal Match 168gr at 300 yards - 1.9" (with one called flyer)
    IMG_20130224_193522_021_zpsaa6ce9be.jpg

We kept track of all elevation adjustments and reset the zero on our turrets so the next time we should be able to dial in and be spot on at each range. To be honest, the coolest part of the hole day was our first shot at 200. Hfdcowboy was up first, we checked the box of FGGM for bullet drop, did the math and adjusted the scopes, then BAM...his first shot was bullseye at 200. I was stoked to see the theory match up to real world so precisely, I'm officially hooked and can't wait to push my personal limits.

Defiantly be consistent with your amo. I had two different rounds I used for mine thinking I could sight with the cheep and go long with the good. That turned out to be a bad choice.
