So i've been reading a few other forums on different websites. The DNR (http://www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/files/fw-deerhuntguide.pdf)

    For rifles it says:
Rifles with cartridges that fire a bullet of .357-inch diameter or larger; have a
minimum case length of 1.16 inches; and
have a maximum case length of 1.625 inches

are legal to use only during the deer firearm
season. Some cartridges legal for deer
hunting include the .357 Magnum, .38-.40
    Winchester, .41 Magnum, .41 Special, .44
    Magnum, .44 Special, .44-.40 Winchester,
    .45 Colt, .454 Casull, .458 SOCOM, .475
Linebaugh, .480 Ruger, .50 action Express,
    and .500 S&W.

But I've been reading that the maximum case length is 1.8 inches

Which one is it? 1.625 or 1.8?

Currently it is 1.625. The PROPOSED rule is 1.8 mainly to allow the .460 S&W Mag cartridge to be used. This is in the process of being approved but will likely not go into effect until the 2012 season.

What happens if you get caught deer hunting with a larger caliber than what the current law says?

Do you get a ticket? gun permit revoked?

I would guess they could take your firearm and hit you with some serious fines and court cost. I would not mess around with that.

If you get caught hunting illegaly, they can take just about everything you were using on your poaching trip. Gun, ammo, truck, all contents of said truck, etc. This is what I have been told by people I will give the benefit of the doubt to. In short, play by the rules and all is well. As for the new rule change, it is only a proposal right now. It will probobly be approved for 2012.

Don't mess with the DNR. They will put it on you if they want to, and some of them want to all the time.

I hope the 1.8 rule goes thru. I would like to try the Bushmaster round.
