Yeah, I just ignore them unless it's constructive.

I try to do the same. As a left leaning liberal libertarian type person I try to steer clear of Political discussions here and stick to the Guns/Ammo/Accessories/SHTF areas. But sometimes I can't stay away from watching a train wreck...

Regarding reps, I rep whomever I agree with. Sometimes they are lefties, sometimes they are right-winged. If one has a good idea I fully embrace it regardless of their other sometimes moronic posts. If it is complete BS I'll either ignore it or try to constructively give my point of view.

I don't give negative rep (tho sometimes I really want to) and I don't call people names. And I always try to listen closely and think critically. Sadly some people here and elsewhere are not like that. And so, I do might best to ignore them.

I don't use the ignore feature because alsmost everybody has something to contribute to the discussions. Also, it makes more sense to hear both sides rather than everybody saying "you are right" to each other all the time.

    +1

I'm politically moderate, which around here makes me feel like a screaming liberal :D. To combat that, I read a couple of websites on social issues I care about and I feel like a right wing whacko.

The height of hypocrisy of the folks who say that anyone who doesn't agree with them is un-American. I thought that the right to disagree was sort of enshrined in the Constitution of the United States of America. I have a lot of respect for folks who have thought through their opinions and who can articulate why they think the way they do. I don't have much respect for the folks who are merely parroting the loudest demagogues and who try to drown out anyone who disagrees with them. Regardless of which side of the political spectrum they are on.

Don't forget another of their favorite tactics, they love to hit the report post button and complain to the mods about some people's posts.

The left or right leaning posters? Personally, I don't see a point in reporting a post that someone expresses their opinion or negatively repping them for it either. I have never given a negative rep or will I ever unless I recieve one from another poster.

Same here. The only posts I've reported to mods are ones that violate the TOS or are duplicates of other threads, and even then I don't do that often. Thus far I've never given a negative rep, and the only one I've gotten was given in mistake and the poster positively repped me to make up for it.

What? But Reagan was the ultimate conservative president! You know, tripling the public debt. Great conservative policy there.

Actually I like him best when he was the governor of California. Excellent gun control legislation!

I guess I've been lucky. I haven't ever been hammered here for arguing a position from the left. Honestly, I've encountered a lot more ridiculous, fallacious, and personal arguments from the folks on the left who post here.

Also, just a question - who in our history are the great Presidents? Please name some from later than 1820.

You aren't hammered because most of the ones who jump on anyone who isn't far right on everything tend to agree with you on a lot of your posts. A lot of people want everything their way and nobody to ever speak a different view even though most of America apparently views things different than many here. In my opinion you make your points from a libertarian/non-governmental point of view on most cases.

As far as the second part of your question:
    Thats easy...Woodrow Wilson:rockwoot:

As I've said repeatedly, my favorite is William Henry Harrison (1841), who had the good decency to drop dead shortly after taking office.

I'm not too upset with Calvin Coolidge, who seemed to do much better on economic issues than almost any other of that period, but I'm sure that if I did enough research I'd find something to be disgruntled about.

In my lifetime? Let's see... Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton, Bush 2, Obama... Nope. The only one that I have the least bit of respect for was Reagan, and then only because he was willing to beard the [strike]lion[/strike] bear in its den ("tear down this wall!"). I love it when people drop the pretense and call it out.

If this isn't a joke, I would have to say that Woodrow Wilson would be a pretty darn leftist choice.

I understand what you're saying, given your feelings about governments of any type. My point though, is if you're looking for great presidents from the context of some being great and some being terrible, who you like is revealing. Just as your favorite and your reasoning for that, are pretty revealing about your views.

If you evaluate 20th century presidents, and you are conservative or libertarian, and yet you think Reagan and Bush were terrible, I'm asking who was good? If you say none, fine, I get that. In these types of discussions, there's a question that needs to be asked: Compared to what?

I find comparisons between real people and real situations compelling. Comparisons between real people and situations, and the idealistic views people hold in their heads, will always leave the folks who had to solve real problems in the real world wanting. Life is a lot messier than it seems in the freshman dorm over beer and pizza.
