    One thing that struck me as odd, though, is that they confiscated his personal firearm. Don't we have a due process clause that we comply with before confiscating personal property?

    Nope. It was a domestic violence charge. Lots of privately owned firearms get confiscated in those circumstances. You can thank Lautenberg for that.
