Actually the .22LR for years was what was used in the bulk of "mafia executions".

Not just mafia, but our own government as well. The OSS had suppressed Hi-Standard pistols for the same reason. At close range and with proper bullet placement (i.e., they don't see it coming) it can kill with very stealthily, especially when suppressed and the gun shot it quieter than most pellet guns.
