I often see people at the VA Medical Center park their car, get out, remove their pistol and shoulder rig, place it in the trunk, and then go into the Hospital. You are not even allowed to have a firearm on the property, but still people do.

That would be Wishard in Indianapolis by virtue of the fact that it hosts a medical detention unit operated by the Department of Correction.

Does this contrast from a hospital that provides medical care for inmates? For example Union hospital in Terre Haute has an area that sees inmates from the local pen. It is staffed by guards from the pen, entrapment area, positive ID, all that stuff etc...

The Indiana State Law actually says that firearms are prohibited in hospitals that have a mental facility on premis. This would include St. Vincent Hospital on 86th Street, Community North Hospital and Wishard. There may be more but I know about those 3. The other hospitals can have a policy that doesn't allow firearms but it is not upheld by state law. They can however ask you to leave and if you don't then you can be charged with tresspassing. That is their loophole.

BTW, this is my first post but I have been browsing the site for a long time, just decided to start posting. I got frustrated a few nights ago when I couldn't respond to a for sale ad and missed out on buying my wife a nice gun.

Don't forget the "pen" in the Haute is Federal not state, so I do not know how the law would be different?

As the husband of a RN I know that no matter what an ER cannot refuse treatment to someone who is serious enough to need it. They may have their guards or police disarm you but if you walk in missing an arm or having a heart attack armed to the teeth they legally canno refuse you treatment if it could possibly result in you being harmed further OR even dying from it.
Now if you are carrying OPENLY or they ahve detectors and are only bringing someone to the ER or hospital OR are just visiting AND they are not protected bh the law IE mental health ward or inmate ward, THEN they can ask you to leave.
I have been to the ER twice since Mother's Day of 2012 and have had 3 kidney surgeries since then as well. None of those visits were we asked to leave or disarm and once we were settled in I handed my pistol to my wife as she is also a LTCH holder. It sucks that some people only have access to hospitals that dont trust legal carry owners or their own security. By their own security I mean that they should be confident that their security measures are sufficient and they should have back up to the 1st tier and backup to the backup.
I can see bringing inmates to the hospitals for surgeries and MAYBE major tests like MRI or CT Scans. BUT I believe that each jail should have medical staff of atleast a paramedic so as to not bring the inmates out in public unless they need something major that only a hospital could provide.
Then again thats my opinion and they are like rears everyone has one and most people think everyone else's stinks...LOL

Took my bride to an E.R. Sunday. Parked in front, went in and grabbed a chair and wheeled her in. Black uniformed security seemed to outnumber the nurses. We went to the admissions door and a guard stopped me and asked if I had a pocket knife. He held my SOG Flash Tanto till I came back out. While at the adm counter the realization hit me: MY GUN IS STILL IN MY POCKET! No, I did Not go back and give it to the guard.

I always carry at the hospital. Heck, I know a ton of ER nurses that carry.

Last month, my dad had a stroke. I carried the entire time I was visiting him in Ames, Iowa at the hospital. I just covered it up.

I am in the habit now of taking my gun out of the holster and locking it up anytime I go into the hospital. I work for a medical equipment company and make pretty frequent deliveries into hospitals. That is the only time I am unarmed while working. I never thought to take my knife off though. I always have that clipped in my pocket. Never had a word said about it at a hospital though. Casino is another story.

Why, when it's not required that you disarm?

Got a reference to back up that claim? I posted IC that disputes that.

I guess Union is a no go. It is staffed 24 hours and that was the only stipulation according to 11.1.

Not exactly. That is not the only requirement.:twocents:

The TYPE of inmate should not matter the hospital does.

I don't think the law states that guns cannot be carried at locations with mental health facilities, but off the top of my head I believe that it stipulates that it is illegal to carry at a state or county-funded facility where 24 hour armed guards are present. In this scenario then yes, Wishard is strictly no-carry but other places with mental health facilities are not.
