So, I've been working 70 hours a week for several weeks now, and am about ready to make my next firearm purchase, but I'm kinda struggling with what I want to purchase. I have numerous revolvers/auto loaders, so I'm good there, I have a nice .12 ga. bolt action shotty, several 91/30s, an M44, and a few AKs. I'm sort of leaning towards a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500, OR a .22 rifle, say, a 1022. I really don't have a small game rifle for SHTF, but feel the 870/500 would do the same task, but be more versatile. I'm looking for suggestions/opinions, and I don't care how "out there" they may be. Just wanting to weigh all options.

I'd say go for the .22. In a true SHTF/TEOTWAWKI situation, you aren't going to be worried about game wardens and sportsmanship, so you could take whatever game you want with the .22. You can stockpile a profound number of rounds for it, and a good bolt action rimfire has a useful lifespan that's probably in the millions of rounds.

A 22 like the Ruger 10/22 would make the most sense. You can mod these things more so than any other gun made today, ammo is cheaper than any other caliber, it will take small game, can be shot with quiet ammo, shoots well out to 100 yards, ammo is cheap, ammo is cheap...

    btw ammo is cheap.

another vote for a 10/22. Ive got mine setup with a butlercreek stock and a heavy chrome lined barrel with a slightly tighter twist and a much light trigger in it, i have maybe 230 bucks in it counting the original price of the rifle and the scope. Its accurate up to 150 yds, which a .22 to me is impressive i did actually get it to hit 200 yds a couple times but that was more of lobbing the rounds by aiming way way high and heck of a lot of luck, my other completely stock. 10/22 is lucky to hit the center at 100yds. In terms of price and ammo availability, it cant be beat.

I dunno, fellas. Nothing says "Mr. bad guy/home invader, I'm really not playing." like the chuck chuck of an 870 or 500 slide in an otherwise quiet house..... Not against the .22, at all, but priorities is priorities.

For $500 or less you can get a Buckmark and a 10/22. I would rather have Savage bolt action, or a Marlin Model 60 as far as auto loaders go.

Looking at your list though I would definitely get a .22LR, trade the bolt shotty for a pump, and trade a Mosin and an AK for a nice rifle in a versatile caliber. There's nothing wrong with either rifle, but there's not much in ammo choices either.

I went and fondled a few different guns at Bass Pro this morning, I think I'm gonna go with the majority here and get a stainless 10/22, it was really nice, and I have a stockpile of .22 ammo already. I did stock up on .44 mag and .45acp rounds too!:D

A good semi/bolt action .22. For a semi: I like the Remington 597, Marlin model 60, and trying to like the 10/22 if I could get mine to function properly.

As for a bolt action: I really like the Marlin 925, and the Savage MKII.

Umarex/Colt M16 22 LR. With the right ammo its a great gun. No failures and very accurate. They got a lot of bad press, but mine is great.
Also, GSG AK47 22LR. Only one endorsed by Mikhail himself. Great gun as well. Ruger MK Series 22's. Extremely accurate.
Everybodys got a 10/22. Although they are great guns, try something different.

I love my 10/22. Besides the fact that it's really cheap to shoot, the pure satisfaction of hearing the metal can go "clang" is enough for me.

I had a similar problem with my 10/22 after i did all the mods to it, now it doesnt like running the extremely cheap .22 bulk stuff like Rem Thunderbolt brand, especially the hollow points from that brand. It wont cycle them worth a d**n, i then tried running CCIs and it loves them and it doesnt matter if its the SP or HP from CCI, it chews threw them great. maybe try different ammo if you havent already:dunno:

littletommy, I think you did right. You can never go wrong having a .22. The 870 will make an excellent next gun to save for.
