well here is my new woods bumming set up i guess is what i am gonna call it. the first one is a custom from jk knives or stomper on bladeforums. its called the phoneix its 9" oal, 4 1/2" blade, 1/8" thick in 01 steel. most my knives are in 01 as its one of my favorite steels. i also asked for him to leave the spine square so it can throw good sparks. he also hooked me up with a nice pouch type leather sheath with a firesteel holder and a fire steel with matching micarta handles. it feels great in the hand and has already made some awesome feather sticks. the only one down side i saw was it wasn't as hair popping sharp as i am use to seeing from custom makers but it was adequate for sure.

and then next in my pocket is a swiss army one handed trekker. i wanted it in a bright orange but couldn't find one at all. and it was hard enough to find them with a plain blade, no serrations as i think they are a waste. but i guess the swiss army and german army like the serrations. either way its got a good amount of utility in a small package. its a frame lock of sort which i love and it came pretty sharp from the factory. the little saw is very nice and the can opener works great.

so all around i think this set up is great for all camp chores from splitting wood, making the fire, cleaning game/fish, whittling, making primitive tools and utensils like wooden spoons and what not. and now to stop my babbling and on to the pictures :)

thanks guys. cubby it does fit the hand great. it basically just feels like a extension. so i think that prolonged work with it should be great and not cause any real hot spots. hopefully on monday or tuesday depending on the weather i will be able to get out there and run it through some paces. i can't wait

Being a very novice knife guy, can you help me out? What would you be doing to "run it through some paces? I see a lot of heavy fixed blade knives here but I guess I don't understand all of the uses, heck I even own one. My curiosity was raised when you mentioned "prolonged work" Thanks!

well damn it didn't take my response lol so now i have to type it again lol. fishersjohn i think putting it through its paces all depends on who you talk to and what they are doing with the knife (and i am still kinda a novice myself i mean i am no cubby )

either way for me putting it through its paces this week will be collecting fire wood then working it down by battoning it to pencil size and smaller for good initial fire starting (though do the knifes size it will not be really big pieces), also collecting tinder and making tinder and then lighting the fire with it, i will also use it to make a debris shelter, i am gonna try to carve a spoon or something similar, also for food prep (not a lot of it but some). i will also use it to make my parts and pieces for snares and traps, and tons of other little odd and ends you use your knife for that you never think about like cutting cordage ect, and then when i am done i will test the edge to see how it help up and its sharpness still for edge retention. i am also notorious for using my knife for tons of non knife tasks , i got in the habit when i was in the army and didn't have the right tool but always had my knives on me. anyways thats how i will be putting this one through its paces for me. though i am sure for lots of other knife users who use their knives for different stuff it means something else and they test it differently. hope this helps some sir
