Bought it the other day, i dont know much about revolvers (Ill admit it!)
There is a story behind how I aquired this but that story will have to wait for a while (yes i paid for it.)

This much I do know. Its a Smith and Wesson .38 model 36. I've been told its around 20 +/- a couple years.

Those are pretty good guns. My dad has a 36 and a 36-6 and they are a blast to shoot. I do not know a lot about the 36, but the 36-6 is "1 of 615 guns made in 1989. The production run of this gun was the last time S&W made the Chief's Special Target guns!" (S&W Forum)

Congrats on the new gun! A Smith is a great way to start.

Shooting a snubbie is very different from shooting a full size revolver. If you struggle with shooting it comfortably don't give up on revolvers until you've spent some time with a full size.

Just a reminder, don't shoot a steady diet of hot +P ammo through this gun. The older Smiths are not rated for it. That said, great wheelgun!

I had that snubby Smith 36 in .38 special and loved it. I thought it was a lady Smith for years because of the super slim grip, but I was wrong. I have since seen that model sell for $500 as it is a sought after revolver. That is a gun that will gain value over time. Congrats on a smart buy

my friend/co-worker has a couple of new (1-3 year old) s&w revolvers. he has let me shoot them before and they are somewhat difficult for me to hang on to... so i kind of know what to expect with it. but still looking forward to putting a couple rounds down pipe to get used to it. im thinking this may be my backup, but with part of the story behind it i may not.

thanks for the comments and new gun rep!

by the way, does anyone have the s&w book for serial number info? i googled that and found either pay 50 bucks to s&w for info or buy the book :-/

You might try posting on one of the SW collector forums, someone there will probably be able to help. BTW nice piece, a much nicer gun then current production models.

yea its a little older gun, but as long as you are comfortable with it and can hit your target that's all that matters. S&W make alot of modern revolvers that you might want to check out. I carry the S&W .38 spl m642 airlite. I definitely reccomend the airlite. the 642 is hammerless (which i love) and the 632 has a normal hammer like yours. the also make a shrouded hammer .38 spl but i forget the model #.
