Well, My high standard .22 project, ( https://www.indianagunowners.com/fo...h-standard-model-b-restoration-posterity.html ), needs more tuning, but I showed it to my dad, and told him I intended to give it to him when it's done. What's the old man do? He one ups me again! Gives me this SMLE sporter and a couple hundred rounds of mil surp! ( https://www.indianagunowners.com/fo...mething-ive-never-physically-seen-my-day.html ) What can I say? My old man knows how to make my day!
Anyhow, I know very little about the SMLE, and this one has no definite maker's mark on the receiver, so any info you can gather from my pics and decipher for me, I'll be eternally grateful! One question I have, Is the barrel a cut down military barrel, or a replacement?
I would like to do a scout mount/scope, since this is a fast 18.5" rifle, but don't want to spend cash on parts that won't work! It came to me with the rail that's on it, and I had this 4X32 laying around that feels great on it, as a fast, light bush type rifle! Until I can afford a good scout setup, I imagine I'll be tickled with this setup!
OK, I'll shut up now! Here's your porn, ya pervs!
Now the barrel I was asking about.
And finally all the rollmarks that might help the pros ID what I have here! Again, any help is appreciated!
This is upside down, below the ejector screw.
This is the right, rear, top of the receiver.
This is under the right rear portion of the handguard
Hell, if you know what they mean, you know where they are!
This one says 47, on the barrel.
Is this an arsenal engraving? Because they stripped the factory rollmarks? Appears to say, "6/47 AB", then a 4 digit serial#.
I know the purists are heaving right now, but in my mind, an old sporter has it's own little bit of history! Like getting Grandpa's Winchester 94! This is my second mil-surp sporter, and I think they are great! My other was an 03' Springfield, with 1/4 minute, click adjustable peeps, and a super slick bolt. I traded it poorly, and miss it madly, but hopefully this one will fill the void in my heart AND in my collection!
(Here's the 03' in case the purists still have some dinner in their bellies!)
