This story is true and it took place right here in Evansville, Indiana. This morning I was introduced to a gentleman at a local event I was at.
I have promised to keep his name and place of business confidential. This fellow had been employed at a local facility here in Evansville for 23 years. He had a prominent position and had always received a “role model” status during employee evaluations.
This past Wednesday Jan. 6th 2010 started out like any other work day. He parked his truck on the 3rd floor of the parking garage and went to his office. He received a visit from his supervisor, human resource staff and two police officers.
It seems someone had noticed his range bag in the back seat of his truck and reported it. He was asked about it and he acknowledged he did have one in his truck. He was then asked if there were in guns in the vehicle. He told them he had an antique 22 rifle, but no ammunition. He was planning on going to the range after work.
After his truck was searched he was told that he was terminated and escorted off the company property. Not only was he employed there, but so was his wife. He was told that he must call security before he could bring his wife to work on days that she could not drive herself and that he could no longer eat dinner with her in the lunch room. He has been banned from the company property.
This individual and his wife have been devastated. After 23 years this facility had no more loyalty to a model employee than that. With today’s employment situation it will be difficult to say the least to find another job. On top of tha,t what will the reaction of a future employer be if this person has to explain why he was terminated from a job he’s held for 23 years?
You can now see why it is vital that Sen. Johnny Nugent’s SB 25 gets passed into to law this session. There are plenty more folks yet to find themselves in similar situations in the future.
I hope, too, that all of you no matter what part of Indiana you live in consider helping me get elected to the Indiana State Senate in District 49. The current Senator, Bob Deig has opposed this type of legislation for 4 years. He has told Margie and I countless times he could never support it, however, he did vote for it this past session so he could hope to get a favorable rating from the NRA. He admitted to me that he knew it would not get passed the House during last year’s session. Of course the moment that slipped passed his lips he tried his best get those words back.
Remember that even if I’m not in your district you can still help me become a state senator by going to my website www.jimtomes.com and contribute to my campaign.
I have a primary to deal with on the Republican ticket and I would appreciate any support you can lend. As a state senator I can help protect all Indiana citizens no matter what part of the state you live.
I think there’s a good chance that HB 1058 will not survive. Your calls into the state house like I asked for you all to make have had some affect. Also, our good friend, Ashley Varner, with the NRA told me this morning that she has spoken with Rep. Bischoff, Chairman of the Natural Resources Committee, where that bill is assigned.
She’s also talked with the Vice Chairman, Rep. Cheatham and a few other committee members. Ashley has told me that the NRA will oppose this bill also. The reports I’m getting is that those committee members don’t want to be associated with anything radioactive that could be viewed as anti gun.
