It depends on the dealer. Multiple firearms can be on one 4473. I've seen as many as 31 placed on one form, it was done electronically so the supplemental form was automatically printed, that person got visit from the inquiring mind agency a few days later. It's a long story and rather funny but it was all legit.
If using a paper form then it's a bit more of a pain and the dealer may limit it to available lines, (3 on the newer forms I believe).
Multiple handgun sales, (2 or more purchased within 5 business days) require form 3310 be submitted to the ATF. I don't know about other States but IN requires a copy of the 3310 be submitted to the State Police. Some Southern boarder States are also required to submit a 3310 for the sale of long guns. They can thank Obama and Holder's Fast and Furious fiasco for that.
