I ran across a real nice 2002 3/4 ton suburban with the 8.1. I know this is a towing vehicle but does anyone have any experience with these not towing a trailer? My primary use would be the family vehicle and would be driven mostly within 20 miles each way. Any input on these would be much appreciated.

I think your title is misspelled.....

You meant Gallons Per Mile, not Miles Per Gallon, right??

My guess is you are looking at 12 MPG max for typical short drives, probably less.

Well I'm only getting 14 mpg out of my truck right now and it has nowhere near the power or room of a suburban so I think 12 mpg would be just fine.

I would be surprised if you get 12 mpg out of that. I have a 2003 2500HD Silverado 4x4 with a 6.0 that gets 12-13 mpg. I would guess you could get around 10-11 mpg out of that.

Depending on use and driving style I have seen folks get 10/12 MPG...Towing is another rating and is dependent on weight/wind Resistance etc.

I'd go for a crossover suv. You get better mpg and the room to haul the family around. Also it sits higher so it's easier to get in than a car

I have the exact same truck as slimplmbr, same year and everything. Like said above 12-13 and the best I ever got was 14 while driving to SD, but I've had it get as bad as 9-10 depending on the driving. I'd guess under 10 on the suburban.

I think my brother's 8.1L Avalanche gets only slightly worse MPG than my 5.9L 4x4 Ram. I'm thinking he gets around 13 if he doesn't drive it too hard. Does the same towing. Most of his driving is around town with it these days.
