What is the best way to mount a scope on a 91/30? Is it possible to leave the sights in tact, in case of scope breakage?

Brass stackers mosin scope. It uses the rear sights to attach and is very sturdy. You can then attach a long eye relief (pistol scope)

Second that, or look for a curved bolt and stock scope from a sniper version. Going to cost you a little, another near as good of scope as modern ones, but looks great and functions fairly well.

Isn't it awkward to look through the sight though with where it's positioned down the rifle?

I don't think so, but I'm used to it. It's kind of like looking though a red-dot sight on a handgun.
