Micarta Rods for handle instead of steel?

Seems i cant find any black steel rods for my knife project other than Micarta rods.
I really like the look of these.

Im not going to be abusing this knife too bad, whats INGO's opinion on using these for my handle other than using stainless pins. I dont want my
knife looking to much like a steak knife :dunno:

If I read that correctly, I think you're planning to use them as handle pins. Personally, I probably wouldn't do that. I don't know how you would press them in and have them remain secure. Try here.

edited: I don't think I've ever seen black handle pins, though.

I definitely would not be using micarta or g10 as pins for handle slabs. You don't want to use Colby bolts or tubing that you flare out? You can get pretty cool looking mosaic pins too.

I seen a few nice knife makers using micarta pins :dunno:

so how can i get black steel/alloy pins?
I havn't found anything yet after days of searching.

I do NOT want stainless, brass, nickle, copper
and this is all i see as far as in "pins"

Links? Maybe we're talking about two different things.

In terms of black pin steel, maybe you can find carbon instead of stainless and get a good dark patina on one.

How "hard use" are you planning to make this blade?

man I really like the look of black pins im gonna keep lookin.

The blade is done I have previously posted pics and info. :D

Man... I can only imagine that those blades must have had a great deal of epoxy used or don't plan on actually being used much. To take micarta down to that thin of a round profile to be used as pins... I can't picture much lateral strength.

Heck, I guess I would say give it a shot and see what happens. I agree that it does look nice, though with a custom I would probably prefer mosaics myself. If it doesn't work out, you're the maker and have the skill to redo the slabs with something stronger anyway. :yesway:

Best of luck and I look forward to seeing completed pics.

it sucks. i have used it. it sucks.

but i have some if you want it. if you want to swear, break things, and completely be unsatisfied with the results, we can do it. you will need a carbide 3/16" reamer, though.......

    they are junk.

as to black pins..... not sure... you could use like a blue or parc coat on them i suppose..... or.... just go tacticool and hit them with krylon. i know, i know.... but i use krylon on a few of my user knives, and it does perfectly fine. i know makers who's work goes for thousands upon thousands of dollars who won't recommend anything on a user knife BUT krylon, if they want a coating.... now, he doesn't krylon customer knives, and puts on whatever the customer wants, but for HIS money: spraypaint.

I have had good luck using thin-wall brass or stainless tubing filled with epoxy or devcon dyed to the color I want for colored pins. This is the matrix I use for making mosaic pins but I have made some solid core pins as well (just rough up the inside of the tubing so the epoxy will grip well).
